Thing 17: Weebly websites!

That sounds like something Scooby-Doo might say!  Weebly is not just a funny word or part of a phrase, it is a simple and easy website creator web 2.0 tool.  The best part…wait for it…wait for it….it is FREE!!  Now you know from your experience with just cutting and pasting html code (embed codes) html jibber jabber is almost indecipherable to the untrained!  Those codes are even Greek to me sometimes!  I am by far not a website pro-when it comes to building one from scratch using only html code.  I did suffer through some website creating courses with the html jibber and came out alive, but believe me-spending valuable time looking up codes and figuring out why something will not appear on your website because you forgot to add an > is just too much for me!  I am a teacher too ya know!
Do  you have a classroom website?  Would you like one?  Let me introduce you to the neatest tool ever! Weebly!

I bet your head is just spinning because after I learned what this tool can do I wanted to be back in the classroom.  If you watched the introduction you saw how your students could have accounts and websites, in essence web portfolios! OMG can we say paperless! And the assignment form tool is phenomenal!  By the way you get 40 student accounts for free but there are ways to obtain more accounts.
If you are as excited as I am about this feature and would like more help with weebly go to SchoolTube and search “weebly”.  There is a high school that has created a great series of tutorials on weebly.  Or you can just go play with the features yourself.
Tech-tivity Week 7 Thing 17:
1.    Go to Weebly and sign up for an account using this link: http://education.weebly.com/referral.php?xrlU2RWH83Hgu0qK
2.   Create a very simple web page with two pages: Home and Blog.  The home page can have your contact information and the blog can be an external link to your blog.
3.   Submit your Weebly URL (i.e. www.ocsmedia.weebly.com) in the Google form below.

4.   Optional: Post any comments about Weebly’s features on the Junkie Blog.

This one I have set up as a spot for Skyler, our media hound, to do his thing! I will have to play with making it lots better, but Weebly definitely has an ease of use as far as quick set-up and just dragging in content.

Looks easy but how does it work with Edmodo? I was going to use Edmodo as my class website...

I found Weebly to be easier than Wiki, but after a meeting with my fellow techies....(Thanks Beth and Mary) I did create a really nice wiki classroom website that I will use. Too bad it is not free to publish the Weebly because I think it would be easier to figure out on my own!

I stumbled across Weebly earlier this year. A teacher who uses the same textbook has a Weebly site and it intrigued me, so I set up a Weebly account then. I still need to explore the features in depth. I think I prefer Wikispaces, mostly because I am more familiar with it. Weebly is on my To Do list. :)

Combining a web site and blog will be great for my multimedia class. The web page is a great place to post assignments and links and the students can respond to prompts and express their opinions using the blog. I need to explore the site in more detail. I cannot get into the site to make updates and changes. If anyone can help, please let me know.

@latecomer go to weebly.com and sign in. Then you can edit your page.

I think I have to agree with MKJ; I too prefer wikispaces to Weebly and maybe it is because I am more familiar with it. I may not have done something right when I tried to add my blog because I couldn't get to it from my weebly page, but I'm not sure what I did wrong. I ended up with an additional page and I'm not sure if one or the other will get to my blog.

I use Weebly for my site. I have used other web site tools and Weebly is my favorite for ease of use. My site actually goes to my Weebly site as I found it too hard to update using other programs. www.mrvislosky.com

Haven't decided whether to use it or depend on edmodo. I will have to play with it some more. I did embed a Voki I made to put on it.

I have set this site up for an imaginary cat (Culture Cat) who is working to improve the culture of the school. The site will provide friendship tips and will allow students to brainstorm ideas for making our campus a place where everyone feels welcome and needed. I have to work on how I will present this, but at least I have now established the groundwork!

I've set up a weebly and a wikispaces...not sure which is better. Have also checked out PB works FrontPage for educators. Whew...lots of stuff to look at. I'm panicking a little that I won't have it up and running for the kids. I wish I could just set up something like Ms. McGinnis did on Blogspot! THis works a lot like a wiki?

OOPS! Ms. McGinn! Sorry.

Ms. McGinn, please share the assignment form excitement...I'm not sure how you were using it for students. Also, how would you set up web-portfolios for 120+ students? Thanks!

@Sherri
The assignment form is so neat because you can have students submit files online. No paper handed into you! Documents, presentations, images, etc. all able to be digitally submitted.

That is hard since you can only have 50 portfolios per teacher account. You can beat this by having two teacher accounts. Or you can use another tool- check out livebinders.com as well.

Weebly is a website creator- very different from wikispaces. There are many other features on a wiki that allow more creative features. I like weebly because of the student space but you can do the same thing with a wiki. It is just a preference.

I thought weebly was great at first but I felt I had much more freedom with the wiki so I completed my webpage on wiki. Time4Sail buddy, you have a great wiki, I am jealous. I have to work harder to keep up!

I think weebly is a quick way to get a website up. Its the idea of using weeblys and wikis and other sites together that makes it exciting.

I really like the weebly as it was easy to set up a site. However, I want to compare the wiki and the weebly a little more as I'm sure each has their own special qualities. I am going to use one of them for a Media Website this year.

I maybe wish I would have found this a few years back. I have written a class blog for the past 3 years and love it. I do have to say the formatting was easy for the weebly. I like the multiple pages off the Home too. I might have to look into this in the future. Thanks for letting us play.

I vote for weebly. It was much easier for me to create than the wiki. Of course my experience with the wiki definitely aided since the format is similar. I like the visual format and think it will be easier for my students to use for projects.
