Week 9: Presentations

Keynote and powerpoint definitely get the job done, but do they really capture the attention of your audience?  Most of our students are visual learners and your classroom presentations have to be top-notch to keep the learning flowing.  Web 2.0 has allowed for creative presenting.  In these last ‘things’ we will explore how to savvy up your presentation methods.  We will also see how the cloud is eliminating the need for external storage and increasing the opportunity to share.
Quickly add a comment on the Junkie blog about your use of presentation software.  Do you use it?  How often?  Do you allow students to create using this software?

Ummm...what is the "cloud"?

This video is from YouTube and will need to be viewed off campus due to the web filter.

I have definitely used PowerPoint in my lessons. I have recently discovered Prezi. For me, it takes a little bit of use to get my head around it -- probably because I am teaching myself how to use it. It has such possibilities.
When I was in the classroom I was having my 5th graders use PowerPoint individually and in groups to create presentations. It afforded more possibilities for students to be creative and share what they knew. The great thing about PowerPoint is that it works for students at all ability levels.

Have used PowerPoint and Keynote to present info to students. Our students are now producing keynotes of their own. Just recently had a group of second graders create keynote presentations on the water cycle. They loved making them and then presenting to their classmates who are third graders. Great when kids create content. We also use PowerPoint to create polls and "tests" to be used with the student response "clickers".

Who hasn't used powerpoint? Being a mom of teenager it is pretty much expected that middle schoolers know how to do a powerpoint presentation. If they don't they sure will figure it out in middle school! Since I teach 4th grade I have made sure that my students know the basics of powerpoint and they can independtly make their own presentations. I have never used Keynote, will have to check it out. This year my students have have learned to use Glogster and I have set up an account. I made webquests in college but found them to be wordy and boring. I am excited to go on to the next couple of things to incorporate webquests into glogster.

I have personally used Powerpoint, Prezi, and Slide Rocket (which is my favorite right now). I have taught my students how to use powerpoint, but not extensively. I would like to work with other teachers to help them use these tools in their lessons and to help them teach their students to use these tools to create ways to demonstrate what they are learning.

I have used Powerpoint but realize that it needed to be jazzed up with more bells and whistles to keep interest. The tools that I have learned in this workshop will certainly fit the bill with my students!

I have used both PowerPoint and Prezi in my classroom. I found Prezi to be too dizzy for me. Very random abstract. My third grade gifted students learned how to create PowerPoint presentations for their ancient civilizations research report. Once I showed them the basics on the computer via the projector... they took off. I used my PowerPoint Game Show format for great CFAs using Clickers to collect data. This was a great way to see which student has the concept and which still need remediation. I also used this method to pretest or "inventory" units before teaching my students to aid in developing Differentiated Instruction:) I am very excited to enhance my presentations as well as teach my students all the technology I have learned. Thanks for making me a "Tech Junkie"!!!

I have used PowerPoint very often, and am ready for the 2.0!! My students create one big end of the year project using it.

I preferred Slide Rocket to Prezi. One of the problems I have had in class is with kids who have Macs at home and then have compatability issues at school. Slide Rocket can get around this. After a little more practice, I will give it a try.

So far, I have only used Powerpoint with students from 2nd to 5th grades, using basic research skills and presenting their research on a powerpoint presentation. I have also used it to play Jeopardy with my 4th & 5th graders. I look forward to learning more...

So far I have only used Powerpoint presentations which I made myself. I have also added the interest to a Powerpoint presentation by using "clickers" to allow the students to respond to questions in the Powerpoint. It is obvious that methods that allow the students to produce content or allow them to interact will hold their interest better than the teacher-produced powerpoint.

I really don't use that many "presentation" tools. I have some Powerpoints, but the subject I teach is so focused on "communication" that I don't spend that much time preparing static presentations. The students use presentation tools a lot, however. I favor anything that will allow visual as well as speaking tools. I have to work hard at encouraging more speaking and listening fluency, so Powerpoint is not at the top of my list.

As a first grade teacher, I have only used Powerpoint presentations. I am a dinosaur facing extinction ...! which is why I'm doing this course.

I have used PowerPoint only but saw Prezi demonstrated last year during our PD days. Seemed very interesting, almost like a web. Of course, most of my experience is with PPT, but I will check out Prezi and Skyrocket.
